SAMPLE CUSTOMER REVIEWS

1) It's exactly what it says. No surprise. - Everything to say about Windows 8 has been said a thousandfold, but I've got nothing to work on this minute and Amazon wants me to review my purchase, so here's my 2 cents.

I'm not too fond of the Windows 8 design, although 8.1 and the recently released update have improved things a bit. For the most part, however, I do find the interface reasonably easy to learn and entirely usable (even when working with several windows on the desktop, and using a keyboard and mouse). Though I don't know why there aren't options to revive traditional interface elements like the start menu, everything seems to exist if you take a day or two to learn where to find it. The start->programs menu, for example, is now a full screen menu. It can be reached by pressing win key for the start screen (which is NOT the new equivalent of the programs menu - only the frequently used items), followed by 'tab' 'enter' to scroll below to the menu. And if you know what you are looking for, you can simply start typing its name and press enter without ever looking at the programs menu, which is just as effective as it was in Windows 7 and was always the more efficient way to start applications anyway. So the new interface is not a dealbreaker.

What I don't like -

I can't understand why there are no options for changing the theming of windows, other than color schemes and background images. For many years, every new version of Windows has had these options. I find the new theme, with nothing but blocky solid-color rectangles, to be an ugly step backward. But that is a minor gripe. It has no negative usability or performance implications. On the contrary, I hear it contributes to Windows 8's decent performance on low-end machines. Still, why no optional pretty themes built in? Or at least downloadable from Microsoft? I don't trust third party programs enough to install them just for theming. Glass was the only Windows theme I have actually liked since Classic, so I'm disappointed to see it go after just one generation, and it comes across to me as plain lazy for Microsoft to have left it out.

The integration between the traditional desktop and the modern apps is very poor. The obvious solution to me is to allow Metro apps to run inside a window on the desktop, and vice versa. In other words, rather than have two different classes of applications, I'd like to see a new window mode. Lots of applications already provide a fullscreen mode. Couldn't Windows have simply provided a native fullscreen mode to every application, with the same options that Metro offers? That would be very useful. And we wouldn't need to see virtually duplicate applications, like "media player" and "video" existing side by side, contributing to software bloat.

2) Windows 8.1, try it, not as bad as people claim. - Works and installed perfectly fine. No problem with the serial number.
Moved from Windows 7 to 8.1 and I notice nothing but good things. Search is easy, the start menu is fine once you take a few minutes to customize it. As a programmer and virtual reality developer, I expected all heck with Windows 8. But I don't have anywhere near the issues people are yelling about. I love the fast startup time when coupled with an SSD.
